Final Fantasy XIII Theme Song – My Hands

16 Nov

So I’m not going to lie here, I’m a pretty big gamer. I’ve been into them for years and one of my favourite series of all time has been Final Fantasy. But this is not a gaming blog so why am I talking about this? Well simple, music has always been a key part of the Final Fantasy series, back in what many would regard as the glory days of the series, the game would feature an amazing soundtrack composed by Nobuo Uematsu. Final Fantasy VIII is my personal favourite, I actually own the soundtrack to it on CD, I’ll probably get around to reviewing it for here eventually but that’s not what this is about.

A couple of days ago, RPG addicts the world over rejoiced when it was announced that Final Fantasy XIII  is coming out in Europe and North America on the 9th of March. However they were also in for a shock when the theme song for the game was also announced; that song turned out to be My Hands by Leona Lewis and naturally seeing as it wasn’t sung by some random J-Pop singer that none of the people who play the game have ever heard of, a lot of people started to get a little angry…actually scratch that a lot of people went completely over the top and claimed they wouldn’t buy the game now; because apparently a four minute song ruins a 50 hour long game.

Seeing as the song is from her new album you probably all aren’t familiar with it so here’s a video to update yourselves. Ignore the over the top cheesiness of the video if you can

So enough about the background of it all what’s important is whether or not the song is good right? Well it’s not bad, but that’s the best thing I can say about it. Leona obviously has a great voice, really powerful and if put to the right songs could be a pretty amazing singer but on this it just kind of falls flat. The lyrics aren’t anything special and the production is so over the top and cheesy that any possible amount of pure emotion is squeezed out of it and replaced with something that sounds like it was taken off the shelf at Emotions’R’us. Really the only reason I think this song was chosen is because it’ll probably appeal a lot to the Western market, we all know Leona is huge and as I said it’s only four minutes out of a 50 hour long game so as much as it’s a disappointing choice of song, it’ll hardly come close to ruining it. Plus we all know if they got some random J-Pop singer to sing the exact same song the majority of fans would suddenly love it…

From the gospel of Axver: What’s there to say? Run-of-the-mill pop music with nothing to commend it. Perhaps a little better than the usual pap from manufactured stars, but it’s over-long, boring, and I’ve no idea what it’s got to do with video games. Look out for her music in the $1 bargain bins of 2015

    First!

Come on, you have to have at least person being the first commenter douche, this is a WosdPress blog. 😀

I also have nothing intelligent to say. I’m also going to be a contributor. The two are not exactly exclusive of one another.

Painfully reminiscent of Jordin Sparks attempt at a 2nd album. The emotional peaks just aren’t there, and it come across as forced, like you said John.

Plus, yeah, this has nothing on previous FF intro songs.

    You disappoint me, Leona…you disappoint.
