A Love Letter To “Repo! The Genetic Opera”

Repo! The Genetic Opera DVD Cover

Repo!, Dear Repo!, how do I love thee? I love you from the first opening strains of “Depraved Heart Murder At Sanatorium Square” to the final fade-out of “Epilogue”. You’re a goth rock opera, but you’re so much more than that.

Repo! The Genetic Opera is the masterpiece by Terrance Zdunich and Darren Smith. I was first introduced to Repo! by a friend who essentially Repo!-rolled me and sent me the link to “Zydrate Anatomy” on YouTube.

That is the very definition of an ear worm. And yes, that was Paris Hilton as Amber Sweet. And Alexa Vega from Spy Kids as the girl, Shilo. Terrance Zdunich himself rounds out the main cast as Graverobber. This film is brought to you by the What The Hell?! Casting Agency. If it didn’t get you now, it will. You’ll be laying down to bed, you’re tired, you pull up the blankets, turn out the light, close your eyes and…”ZYDRATE COMES IN A LITTLE GLASS VIAL!” will nest itself in your brain. You won’t have the whole song memorized and you won’t be able to get it out of your head until you watch the YouTube video again. If “Zydrate Anatomy” doesn’t get you, one of Repo!‘s other epic songs will. “We Started This Op’ra Shit” and “Legal Assassin” are good examples of sticky goth opera.

I’m not going to tell you the plot of Repo! or anything else about it. If you’re curious, go see it for yourself. You won’t be sorry. Especially if you’re a fan of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which I am. Repo! is becoming the Rocky Horror of the new millennium, to the point where there are science fiction double features of Rocky and Repo! at horror conventions (no, really) around the country. People dress up as scalpel sluts or sweet transvestites and have sing-and-dance alongs.

I’ve always loved this kind of thing. Anarchist opera about organ repossessions, musical comedy about an over-sexed transvestite, a psychotic barber set on revenge, nihilism, thanatophilia, and subversion in general. There’s something about murder, blood-letting, and violence that I really enjoy. I admit it, I was rooting for The Joker throughout The Dark Knight, and it had nothing to do with Heath Ledger. I just wanted to see what that batcrap crazy bastard was going to do next. Without delving too far into the psychology, it’s safe to say there’s something wrong with me.

That’s Giles from Buffy The Vampire Slayer as Repo Man.
