Album Review: Yo La Tengo – Fade

9 Dec

Wow, 2013 already has its first leak. Or at least the first leak I care about.  Though, it’s not like this album isn’t due out January 15th.

Fade marks Yo La Tengo’s 13th studio album and first since 2009’s Popular Songs and what a return it is. With the opening number, “Ohm” clocking in right around 6 minute, you might find yourself expecting another lengthy player from the New Jersey Trio, but after that it’s all short, but

sweet numbers, managing about a 45 minute run-time.

The album itself is quite dreamy and melodic.  The lyrics focus a great deal on love, sometimes the heart-breaking kind, sometimes the sweet, romantic kind, but always delivered in the far-away vocals that are so common to Yo La Tengo’s music. “Nice and warm/We always wake before we fall/I always know that when we wake up/You’re mine,” Ira Kaplin sings on my easy favorite song on the album: “Stupid Things”.

Every so often, we’re met with percussionist, Georgia Hubley’s sweet, Magnetic Fields-esque vocals, which paint a picture of a sleepless night in the big city beautifully on track “Cornelia and Jane”:  “Too many sirens/They keep you up at night/Sit back and hold your ears/How will we hold back your tears?”

If you’re looking for something with Vocal harmonies, dreamy vocals, plucky acoustic guitar, and some gorgeous pop melodies, look no further than my current favorite album of 2013.
