Does “Just One Yesterday” by Fall Out Boy contain the worst lyrics of 2013?

21 Apr

I think this is a pretty fair question.

My evidence:

Exhibit A:

I thought of angels
Choking on their halos
Get them drunk on rose water
See how dirty I can get them
Pulling out their fragile teeth
And clip their tiny wings

Exhibit B:

The Britney Spears inspired lyric: Anything you say can and will be held against you/So only say my name/It will be held against you

Except Ms. Spears had the decency to not punch us in the face with what the lyric meant.

Exhibit C:

The Big Chorus! “If heaven’s grief brings hell’s rain/Then I’d trade all my tomorrows for just one yesterday”

I…don’t understand the logic behind this one.  Someone please make this association make sense for me.

Exhibit D:

Should you sense the disconnect between the opening of murdering Angels and the lovesick notions of the remaining lyrics, the chorus gets all creepy again: “I want to teach you a lesson in the worst kind of way/Still I’d trade all my tomorrows for just one yesterday”

I love you, but sometimes I just want to beat the shit out of you.

Exhibit E:

Letting people down is my thing baby
Find yourself a new gig

This town ain’t big enough for two of us

BUUURRNNNNNN!

Exhibit F:

If I spilled my guts
The world would never look at you the same way
I’m here to give you all of my love
So I can watch your face as I take it all away

Ok, so let’s get this all straight:  He let her down, but so did she, and apparently she was real horrible to him so his revenge will be to make her love him again before taking it away from her.  Fine, except for the part where it seems like you hope to do this in a horribly violent way, because let’s not forget:

I thought of angels
Choking on their halos
Get them drunk on rose water
See how dirty I can get them
Pulling out their fragile teeth
And clip their tiny wings

The Prosecution Rests

Please note: This is a brief excerpt from a larger case study delving into whether or not Save Rock And Roll is the worst album of 2013.

Um, this is a beautiful song and Save Rock And Roll is a beautiful album. You are just an idiot who can’t appreciate great music.

I believe you are wrong. The entire album is, in my opinion, genius. It might have dark lyrics, but it perfectly describes the extreme anger humans feel when they realize someone important in their life has been screwing them over. Take into account the song “The Mighty Fall”.
D-d-did you trip down twelve steps into Malibu?
So why the hell is there a light that’s keeping us forever?
Bel-air Baby did you get dressed up? Pretty pout-pout.
I can’t stop when there’s these chemicals keeping us together.

The opening verse to this song leads the listener to believe that he’s talking about an addiction to drugs, but if you listen to the second verse:

Your crooked love is just a pyramid scheme, and I’m dizzy on dreams.
But if you ask me, two’s a whole lot lonlier than one.
Baby, we should have left our love in the gutter where we found it.
Of course you think, you think your only crime is that you got caught.

In this verse, the drug references are gone, but it’s clear that he was singing about a different addiction from the start. He’s addicted to her, and now he realizes that she was just using him for something. Now he’s hurting and angry, but he “can’t stop when there’s chemicals keeping [them] together”, the chemicals presumably being hormones. The entire album pretty much follows suit, being about anger and in some cases betrayal. It’s basically a break-up album, FOB style. And unlike the run-down country “she/he took everything from me and now I’m so sad” albums, this album is actually one I don’t mind listening to on repeat for hours, whether I’m going through a break up or not.

Next time you want to criticize a song for content, try lookin at more than the literal lyrics of the song and try, I don’t know, LISTENING to it? That means more than playing the song once, frowning, and looking up the lyrics. Try to understand the actual message the song is trying to convey, and for all you know, that “horrible song” might just become your own personal life story.

it’s actually kind of hilarious. the lack of research done going into this article is astonishing. the author assumes exhibit f is sung by patrick stump when in fact it is sung by foxes, as a feature on the song. this completely changes the interperetation here.
