Ashley’s Top 15 Music Videos of 2013

24 Dec

Last year I made a list of my favorite music videos from the year and, to be honest, I kinda rushed through it.  This year, I decided that I would do my level best to follow music videos year-round and compile a list of my favorites, rather than doing it all in one night, based on other people’s lists of favorites.  The result of that journey was what you see below.  An excellent adventure that began with the return of a legend and ended this very evening with a hilarious bit of music video genius.  So here are my top 15 music videos of 2013, along with 2 honorable mentions that kinda don’t actually count, sorta…you’ll see. 2013 – The Year in Lists – 5 Worst Album Covers

17 Dec

Hey, not bad, I only left the blog to shrivel up and die for four months this time!  I’m proud.

Well, of course, it’s that time of year again.  Time for me to share my thoughts to the world on what music was like this year.

I had thought that this was going to be another slack-off year for me, as far as number of albums I heard was concerned, but when I look back, it was actually a great year.  I fell in love with a new kind of music, my friends and I have so-dubbed it “TumblrCore” after some horrible reviews written by Pitchfork, saw more concerts than I ever have in a single year before and, most importantly, was reunited with some of our favorite acts who decided that 2013 was just too good a year not to come out of the woodwork’s once more.

To start off a year of positives, then, of course, means that the first list I’ll be sharing with you is:  The 5 Worst Album Covers of 2013!!! Continue reading

The big time.

I broke this post up in the first place because I didn’t want this post to be 20 pages long.  But, I am more than ready to wrap this thing up now.

Lets get to it, shall we?

Ashley’s Top Albums of 2012: 20-11

23 Dec

We’ve arrived at the big time, the top 20!

These are some of the best albums I’ve heard all year, obviously, but there’s also sometime special about albums 17-11.  I really badly wanted them all to be in the top ten.

A bottleneck like that is an amazing thing.

So, today I have to make an apology.  I screwed up my list.  In order to fix it, I’m going to have the missing album tied at #25, so, really, this is now my top 51 albums of the year.

But who’s counting?

This bunch of albums is an interesting lot.  A few pics you’ll see on most lists and then a lot of left-fielders.

Let the mysteries now be unveiled!

Yesterday was a bad day for me, as far as sleep goes, and I passed out the minute I got home without doing anything.  I apologize for that, but in my absence, Travis wrote a stellar entry on his top 25, and I thank him for it.

Meanwhile, it’s time to get back to my unnecessarily drawn out top 50!

The Top 25 Albums of 2012

18 Dec

An Ocean of Noise isn’t Tiny Mix Tapes, so I’ll limit this opening paragraph by saying that a lot of good things happened in 2012 and that a lot of bad things happened in 2012 and that music was good and music was bad. Now let’s get to the damn list. Continue reading

Ashley’s Top Albums of 2012: 50-41

Going forward there are two things you need to know:

1) This blog is going to get a lot bigger in the future, I’m thinking of actually investing money into making it a full-blown website: Stay tuned.

2) I will not be the only one writing for much longer.  As I’m sure you’ve noticed, Reggo has made her return, and Traviud has promised he is going to submit his top 25 of the year here as well.  So, what that means is, please understand that this list is not a consensus of the board.  This is just my opinion.  Maybe next year we’ll do a “staff” list instead of several different top lists.

“But, Ashley, what happened to your top songs list?”

I’m glad you asked that, no one, and I have a response for you: I’m incorporating the two together.  I’ve never been good at ranking songs and the more I thought about doing it, the more palpitations of the heart I suffered.  So instead, since I’m breaking this up into groups of 10, I didn’t think one Youtube video per album was too much to share.  Continue reading

Top 5 New Artists of 2012

16 Dec

For a while, I thought this year was a little devoid of new music.  New artists.  The hip new cats on the scene.  The movers and shakers, the trend-setters, the fresh sounds, the modern beat, the….oh you get the idea.

Fact is, it really wasn’t until the last few weeks/month that I began to find these bands and I’m glad I did.  These five bands all had debut albums this year that will be appearing in my top 50 albums list.

That, for the record, is my rule for this list: You must have had a debut album out in 2012.  So even a band that may have had a previous EP out is still eligible for the list.  On the flip side, an EP is not enough to get you on this list.  More on that later.  Continue reading

The 10 Worst Albums of 2012

15 Dec

Yeah, I know, I was supposed to do 5 favorite new artists today.  Have to put a hold on that.  I still haven’t heard Metz’s album, and after today, I just wasn’t in the mood.

This is not the time or place really to acknowledge what happened in Connecticut today in any way, save to say that I’m so very deeply troubled by it all.  My heart is broken in two over this and now I’m just turning to the blog to try and cheer myself up a bit.  I will also share, as I am with everyone, these two organizations that, should you wish to help, are on hand attempting to counsel students, parents and faculty at Sandy Hook Elementary after the tragedy that occurred today:

Newtown Youth and Family Services – nonprofit mental health clinic, that will be open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for emergency counseling for families, community members or staff involved in the Sandy Hook

Newtown Parent Connection – substance abuse, also offers bereavement group counseling for parents

Ok, now let’s get on with ragging on bad albums and all try to smile just a little. Continue reading
