Lollapalooza 2013 – The Year without a Death Grips?

3 Aug

So, I just got back from Jessie Ware’s Lollapalooza aftershow.  What a treat.  What an artist.  Adorably drunk, sharing stories with her fans about her brother (an aspiring doctor who is unlucky in love, though there were a few other doctors in the crowd trying to give her their digits for him), leading sing-alongs, forgetting lyrics and apologizing mid-line.  It was a wonderful performance.

On the other side of town, Death Grips fans weren’t so lucky.

^This guy is great, btw. Major poster on the Lollapalooza message board, sad for him.

^Having trouble embedding that pic, but it’s good for a laugh, so I suggest clicking on the link.

A potentially dark turn is the background they used:

You can find more unrelenting anger via a quick Twitter Search

I’m probably going to keep updating this with Tweets I enjoy, so there’s a good reason to keep coming back ;).

Can’t wait to see if they show up to Lolla tomorrow!

The Top 25 Albums of 2012

18 Dec

An Ocean of Noise isn’t Tiny Mix Tapes, so I’ll limit this opening paragraph by saying that a lot of good things happened in 2012 and that a lot of bad things happened in 2012 and that music was good and music was bad. Now let’s get to the damn list. Continue reading

Ashley’s Top Albums of 2012: 50-41

18 Dec

Going forward there are two things you need to know:

1) This blog is going to get a lot bigger in the future, I’m thinking of actually investing money into making it a full-blown website: Stay tuned.

2) I will not be the only one writing for much longer.  As I’m sure you’ve noticed, Reggo has made her return, and Traviud has promised he is going to submit his top 25 of the year here as well.  So, what that means is, please understand that this list is not a consensus of the board.  This is just my opinion.  Maybe next year we’ll do a “staff” list instead of several different top lists.

“But, Ashley, what happened to your top songs list?”

I’m glad you asked that, no one, and I have a response for you: I’m incorporating the two together.  I’ve never been good at ranking songs and the more I thought about doing it, the more palpitations of the heart I suffered.  So instead, since I’m breaking this up into groups of 10, I didn’t think one Youtube video per album was too much to share.  Continue reading

Top 5 New Artists of 2012

16 Dec

For a while, I thought this year was a little devoid of new music.  New artists.  The hip new cats on the scene.  The movers and shakers, the trend-setters, the fresh sounds, the modern beat, the….oh you get the idea.

Fact is, it really wasn’t until the last few weeks/month that I began to find these bands and I’m glad I did.  These five bands all had debut albums this year that will be appearing in my top 50 albums list.

That, for the record, is my rule for this list: You must have had a debut album out in 2012.  So even a band that may have had a previous EP out is still eligible for the list.  On the flip side, an EP is not enough to get you on this list.  More on that later.  Continue reading
